Trunk and Branch Wrapping: Step-by-Step

Trunk and branch wraps create a striking, detailed look and are best achieved with smaller string lights spaced 4–6 inches apart. This technique follows the tree’s natural structure for impressive nighttime displays.

Pro Tip: Use Brown Wire mini lights to blend into the bark of the tree.

Steps:

  1. Assess Your Tree

Before you begin, step back and decide which branches to highlight so you can make the most impact and retain the tree’s natural shape.

2. Start at the Base (With the Lights Powered On!)

Plug in your lights before wrapping—faulty strings are easier to spot this way. Begin at the base of the trunk.

3. Wrap Evenly and Tightly

Work your way up, keeping lights snug (but not too tight) to prevent slippage. Avoid crossing over the lights, which can create a messy appearance.

4. Use a Splitter for Multiple Branches

When you reach the top of the trunk, attach a 3- or 5-tap splitter and run light strings down your featured branches, aiming for consistent, non-overlapping spacing.

5. Double the Spacing for Smaller Branches

If you want to highlight smaller offshoots, double the light spacing as you wrap up the branch, then return down between the lines.

Pro Tip: Finish With a Y

End each major branch with a 'Y' shape or split at the tip. This gives your tree a natural, elegant look instead of a bunch of straight lines.

Adjust for Budget and Impact: The density of your lights depends on your desired effect and your budget. It might take a few tries to get the look just right—don’t be afraid to adjust as you go!

Wrapping Up

With tree wrapping, you can easily highlight your tree’s beauty in every season. Remember to:

  • Plan your design before starting

  • Test lights as you go

  • Use proper tools for safety and efficiency

  • Adjust to create your perfect custom look

These simple techniques help ensure your trees look magical—and your installation stays safe and sturdy—all year long!
