Google Maps provides a method to measure your home's roofline dimensions remotely. This guide explains how to use satellite imagery and built-in measurement tools to get accurate measurements for installing exterior lighting, whether you're a contractor or homeowner.

What you’ll need:

  • A computer with internet access

  • Google Maps in your web browser

  • Your property address

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Access Google Maps

Visit https://google.com/maps in your web browser.

2. Switch to Satellite View

  1. Hover over the "Layers" icon in the bottom left corner

  2. Click "More" in the menu that appears

  3. Select "Satellite" as your Map type

  4. Ensure "Globe view" is checked to enable 3D viewing

Note: 3D viewing is primarily available in larger metropolitan areas. You can still measure rooflines without this feature by following the measurement steps.

3. Locate Your Property

Enter your address in the search bar to find your property.

4. Enable 3D Perspective

  1. While viewing your property from above, click the 3D button on the right side of the window

  2. Alternatively, hold down Ctrl and drag with your mouse on the map surface to change the 3D perspective

5. Take Measurements

Once you’ve gotten close to your home in 3D view, you can start to measure.

  1. Right-click on one end of your roofline

  2. Select "Measure distance" from the dropdown menu

  3. Click the other end of the roofline segment to complete the measurement

  4. To measure additional sections, right-click and select "Clear measurement" first

  5. Repeat the process for all sections of roofline you plan to illuminate

Pro Tip: This measurement tool can also help estimate tree crown sizes for wrap lighting.

6. Calculate Total Length

  1. Add all of your measurements together. You may wish to add 10-15% extra length to account for measurement variations.

Important Considerations

  • Measurements may not be perfectly accurate - use them as estimates

  • Consider breaking up longer sections into manageable lengths

  • Account for power cord routing between different roofline sections

Next Steps

Once you have your measurements:

  • Choose appropriate base wire lengths for your project

  • Select bulb type and spacing

  • Calculate the number of clips needed (one per bulb)

  • Plan your power source locations
