What is a Zip Plug?
A zip plug is an electrical connector that lets you easily add male or female plugs to your Christmas light cords and extension cables. The term “vampire plug” refers to the metal teeth inside that “bite” into the wire, creating a secure electrical connection.
Male and female types: Female plugs can often be adapted as in-line plugs, so you can branch out your wiring wherever needed.
Polarized: Zip plug teeth are designed to pierce both sides of the wire in the correct position. The “neutral” tooth lines up with the larger prong (or hole).
Pairing Zip Plugs with the Right Wire
Zip plugs are designed for use with SPT (Stranded, Parallel, Thermoplastic) wire:
Stranded: Flexible, bundled wires that handle bending and twisting.
Parallel: Each bulb is wired independently—if one goes out, the others stay lit.
Thermoplastic: Durable PVC insulation that’s heat- and weather-resistant.
Two Types of SPT Wire:
SPT-1: 0.03" insulation thickness
SPT-2: 0.045" insulation thickness (50% thicker than SPT-1, offering greater weather resistance)
Important Matching Rule:
Always match your zip plugs to the wire—SPT-1 plugs with SPT-1 wire, SPT-2 plugs with SPT-2 wire. Otherwise, the plug may not fit properly or the teeth may not connect to the copper.
Big Star Lights sells only SPT-2 for superior performance in tough climates.
How to Install a Zip Plug
Safety First: Never cut wire that’s plugged in!
Split the Wire: Use wire cutters to separate about 1/4" at the end of the cord. Lightly rub the copper with the PVC coating to tuck it away.
Find the Neutral/Ribbed Side: Feel along the cord—one side will be ribbed; that’s your neutral side.
Remember: “Ribbed Side Right” (ribbed wire goes to the right side of the plug, to the larger prong/tooth). Many plugs are labeled for ease.
Insert the Wire: Place the divided ends into the back channel of the plug, as deep as possible.
Press to Connect: Push the wire so the teeth pierce through the insulation and make proper contact with the copper.
Secure the Back: Slide the cap on, using the handles of your wire cutters for leverage if needed.
Complete the Circuit: Attach a male plug to one end and a female to the other. For female in-line plugs, remove the tab at the back (if present), and add the plug anywhere along your line—but use only one male plug per circuit.
Tips and Troubleshooting
Double-check alignment: Neutral (ribbed) always to the larger prong for safety.
SPT-2 preferred for harsh weather: Thicker insulation lasts longer outdoors.
Don’t overload your circuit: Add only one male plug per wire run.
