Before You Begin: A Quick Disclaimer
Big Star Lights products (excluding Chromaglow and Stretch String Mini Lights) are designed for seasonal use—ideally for up to 120 consecutive days. If you use our lights beyond this period or as part of a permanent installation, it’s important to know that your warranty coverage does not apply. For full warranty details, check out our Warranty Policy.
We understand that many of our customers love the look of our lights year-round. If you choose to use them longer than the recommended period, here are our top safety tips to help you do so responsibly.
1. Don’t Overload Your Installation
Stick to our recommended maximum lengths for each product type:
E17 socket wire (C9s or G30s): up to 250 ft
E12 socket wire (C7s or G20s): up to 250 ft
E26 socket wire, SPT-2: up to 250 ft
E26 socket wire, HD 14AWG (330 ft sections): up to 330 ft
5mm mini-lights & C6 string lights: up to 45 strings per adapter (for whites/cool colors), 90 strings per adapter (for red, orange and yellow).
Microlights: up to 7 strings per adapter
If you use bulbs from other brands or higher-wattage bulbs, the safe maximum may decrease. When unsure, use a clamp meter to check your electrical draw.
Remember: older wire can draw more power, so adjust number of strings accordingly.
2. Dielectric Grease is Your Best Friend!
Apply dielectric grease to plugs and prongs to protect against moisture, corrosion, and the risk of sparking. We offer pre-greased zip plugs for convenience, or you can purchase grease at most hardware stores and apply it as needed.
3. Inspect and Maintain Regularly
At least once at the start of each season, check all bulbs and connections:
Replace burnt out bulbs immediately.
Look for corrosion or loose wire connections.
If using mini-lights on live trees or shrubs, ensure the string isn’t restricting the plant’s growth—especially for younger trees.
Seasonal inspections (especially before harsh weather) help keep your installation safe and looking great.
4. Use Secure Anchoring and Attachments
For permanent setups, anchors are stronger and longer-lasting than glue, zip-ties, or plastic clips. Consider:
Anchor eye bolts for solid surfaces (different techniques for masonry, concrete, or wood).
For long spans, support your lights with steel aircraft cable and sturdy guy wire for maximum durability.
Remember, plastic fasteners can degrade from sun exposure and require regular replacement.
5. Choose SPT-2 Wire for Longevity
SPT-2 wire is thicker and better insulated than SPT-1 wire. It offers:
Better performance in cold Canadian winters
Increased UV resistance for longer life in direct sunlight
This makes SPT-2 wire a smart investment for any long-term installation.
