Introduction
If you’re having trouble with one of your E17 or E12 light sockets, you don’t need to replace the whole string. This guide will show you how to remove the faulty socket from SPT-2 wire and install a new one, step by step.
What You’ll Need
Replacement E17 or E12 socket (compatible with SPT-2 wire)
Strong pliers
A hard, flat surface
Removing the Old Socket
Grip the Socket:
Use strong pliers to grab the open end of the malfunctioning socket.
Remove the Socket:
With your other hand, firmly grab the two loose wires coming out of the socket and pull down.
Tip: This step can take a bit of force and might require a few tries. You can also gently smash the socket off with a hammer.
Installing the Replacement Socket
Check the Prongs:
Your new socket will have two copper prongs—these need to pierce through the vinyl insulation and contact the copper wires inside (just like a zip plug).
Position the Wire:
Place the mounting bracket part of the new socket on a hard, flat surface.
Lay the Wire:
Place your SPT-2 wire on top of the bracket, ensuring it’s straight, untwisted, and matched in orientation with the rest of your bulbs.
Attach the Socket:
Carefully place the socket over the mounting bracket and wire.
Press Firmly:
Push down evenly and firmly on the socket until it’s flush with the mounting surface, sandwiching the wire in between. You should feel the prongs bite through the insulation.
Test Your Repair
Screw a bulb into the new socket and plug your light string in.
If the bulb doesn’t turn on, remove the socket and try again, making sure the prongs fully pierce the wire.
Finishing Up
You’re all set! With a replacement socket correctly installed, your string of lights will work like new.
