Looking for a faster, cleaner way to manage long extension cords on site? Our 5‑gallon bucket dispenser lets you pull cable smoothly from a side‑feed opening, preventing tangles and reducing trip hazards. It protects cords in transit and storage, and makes it easy to label and grab the right length or gauge. Simple to build, durable in the field, and a time-saver on the job.

What you’ll need

  • 5‑gallon plastic bucket

  • Extension cable

  • 2 in hole saw drill bit

  • Drill

  • Marker or tape for placement

  • Safety glasses and gloves

Steps

  1. Mark the hole location

    • Mark a spot on the side of the bucket near the bottom. Leave at least 1 in above the base rim so the plastic stays strong.

  2. Drill the hole

    • Using a 2 in hole saw, drill a clean hole at the mark. Wear eye protection and secure the bucket so it doesn’t spin.

  3. Feed the cable

    • Drop one end of the extension cable into the bucket through the top.

    • Thread that same end out through the 2 in side hole.

  4. Load the cable

    • Place the rest of the cable coiled loosely inside the bucket. Keep coils relaxed to prevent kinks.

  5. Dispense

    • Pull the free end from the side hole. The cable will spin and pay out inside the bucket, helping prevent bunching and tangles.

Tips

  • Slightly bevel or sand the hole edge to reduce abrasion on the cable jacket.

  • Add a lid to keep the cable clean during transport.

  • Label the bucket with cable length for quick ID.
