Brick

Best Solution: Hot Glue

  • Use a high-temperature, heavy-duty glue gun (not a standard craft version) and hot glue sticks.

  • Apply a line of hot glue to the socket of your light—never to the bulb or wire.

  • To keep bulbs perpendicular, apply glue to the base of the socket.

  • For inward-facing bulbs, glue the side of the socket without the branch clip.

  • Hold the socket in place for a few moments to set.

Pro Tips:

  • Hot glue works best at warmer temperatures. Install on a warm day or before the cold sets in.

  • Ice buildup can weigh down sockets, so keep an eye on your lights during icy spells.

Removal:

Peel glue off by hand; if stubborn, use a chisel tool or isopropyl alcohol for residue.

Concrete

Best Solution: Permanent Anchors

  • For a durable install, use anchor and eye bolts. Some adhesives may work on painted or very smooth dry concrete, but anchors are most reliable.

  • Drill a hole with a masonry bit to the appropriate depth (typically a 1/4” bit is used).

  • Blow out dust with compressed air or a vacuum.

  • Insert anchor eye bolt. Add a small amount of caulking for longevity (but don’t overfill).

  • Tap bolt to activate self-tapping or turn as needed.

  • Seal around the bolt to prevent moisture entry.

Pro Tip: Extra-hold adhesive clips may work on painted and clean surfaces—test first!

Metal Flashing (Ferrous Metal)

Best Solution: Magnetic Clips

  • Use magnetic clips compatible with flat wire (like E17 sockets).

  • Pre-attach clips to socket bases.

  • Place sockets on the metal surface.

Pro Tip: Secure with a traditional clip every 5-10 bulbs to prevent a “cascade” of falling lights if one comes loose.

Removal:

Simply pull from one end; the clips remain attached to the sockets for easy reuse.

Aluminum Flashing (Non-ferrous Metal)

Best Solution: Adhesive Clips

  • Use regular or extra-strength adhesive clips placed behind each socket.

  • Pre-attach clips with the backing on, then press firmly to the surface while removing backing as you go.

Pro Tip: Warm adhesive and surfaces with a hair dryer or heat gun for best results in cold weather.

Removal:

Remove sockets from clips or pry off clips (use non-scratching tools). Remove leftover adhesive with Goo Gone or similar.

Gutters with Gutter Guards

Common Challenge:

Metal screen or micro-mesh gutter guards can render traditional clips useless.

Best Solution: Gutter Guard Clips

  • The Gutter Guard Clip is designed to fit securely into the mesh or openings of most gutter guards, providing an anchor point for your lights without removing or damaging the guard.

  • Simply insert the clip into the guard and attach your light string to it—no modifications or extra tools needed.
